Distal Taper

A sword's blade will taper in two ways, in thickness and in profile. The "Distal Taper" is the change in thickness along its length. Most swords will have a linear taper, lessening in thickness from the base of the blade out towards the tip. Others may have a more uneven taper, with some tapering only in the furthest part of the blade. The amount of tapering will depend on the style and blade properties of the sword being made. This is an important feature to maintain the desired handling characteristics of the sword.

Cheaper modern replicas may overlook the distal taper completely or exhibit an incorrect taper, resulting in a heavy feel, or otherwise making the sword feel less lively than it should. In comparison, a properly tapered and balanced replica will feel quite lively and perform like the period originals that inspired it.
