Overview

Karabela was a sword that was widely used in Hungary and Poland during the 17th century. This sword type had great Turkish influence. The blade was usually single-edged and curved. It often had multiple grooves and substantial back. Many of the blades were of Islamic origin. Karabela had a grip formed of plaques held by rivets to the tang. The grip extended at a sharp angle at the pommel. The guard was a cross with short langets.

Karabela also had a variation for cavalry use. Crossguard was extended to form a knucklebow and large thumb ring was attached. Swords of this type are normally associated with hussars.
