Pivot Point

The "Pivot Point" is the location along the blade that the sword naturally pivots around. This is largely determined by the distribution of mass in the sword. This point may appear at different locations depending on the purpose of the sword. Ideally it should be close to the tip for thrusting swords, and nearer to the Center of Percussion for cutting swords.

To determine the location of the pivot point, grip the sword with the forefinger and thumb, with the blade tip pointing down. Gently move your hand side to side within the plane of the sword, and it will naturally rock back and forth, pivoting within your fingers. The point on the blade that moves the least and appears to prefer to stay stationary is the pivot point.

The standard measurement of the pivot point is based on distance from the base of the blade (at the guard).
