Tang

The "Tang" is the portion of the blade that extends past the guard and into the grip. It is usually secured to the back of the pommel by either a threaded nut, or is peened into place, possibly on a peen block.

The tang is sometimes welded onto the shoulders of the blade, and frequently is an extension of the blade itself. There is debate about the reliability of welded tangs, since many inexpensive swords have poor welds.
